Use WhatsApp on multiple devices

The messenger service WhatsApp is the most popular messenger worldwide. More than 100 billion messages are sent via the application from Facebook (or Meta Platforms). Due to the increasing digitalization and use of multiple devices, the need to use the messenger app on multiple devices at the same time is growing. Here we explain how to use the private account on multiple devices at the same time and how to use WhatsApp Business with multiple smartphones at the same time.

Guide to using WhatsApp on multiple devices

WhatsApp has offered a web version for a few years now. Recently, private users can also use the multi-device feature, which enables the user to use multiple devices with the same WhatsApp account at the same time. The same feature also allows WhatsApp business accounts to be used across up to four different devices. However, the feature is still in the testing phase at the moment, and the latest version of the WhatsApp Messenger service is required to use it.

How to use the multi-device feature of WhatsApp

1. open WhatsApp

2. call up settings

3. click on "Linked devices

4. activate "multi-device beta

You can also deactivate the functionality at any time after activation. If the smartphone is not used for more than 14 days, you will be automatically logged out on the other devices. Note: Not all WhatsApp features are supported in the beta version. For example, live locations cannot be viewed from the additional devices. Besides the multi-device feature, WhatsApp can also be used via the conventional web version.

WhatsApp Business with multiple devices and multiple users

At first glance, the multi-device function appears to be advantageous for companies that use WhatsApp Business with several employees. After all, it also allows WhatsApp Business to be used across multiple devices. However, you have to be careful here! The use of WhatsApp Business on multiple devices is not GDPR-compliant!

Messages sent via the WhatsApp multi-device function are also encrypted end-to-end. However, WhatsApp uses metadata and the address book as before. Thus, the use does not comply with the GDPR requirements.

By the way: You can also use WhatsApp with multiple phone numbers at the same time and use WhatsApp Business with the desktop app or the browser app WhatsApp Web.

Use WhatsApp Business with multiple end devices in a GDPR-compliant manner

The only way to use WhatsApp Business fully compliant with the GDPR with multiple devices is to use the WhatsApp API.

With the MATEO communication platform, you can use WhatsApp on as many devices as you like. In addition, all messages from WhatsApp and all other communication channels (email, Facebook Messenger, Instagram Messenger and co.) are collected in a central inbox.

The WhatsApp API does not access any metadata or the address book of your smartphone. After concluding an order data processing contract (ADV contract), the WhatsApp Business API can be used GDPR-compliant for the communication with your customers.

Would you like to use MATEO? Do you have questions about using the WhatsApp Business API? Then simply make a consultation appointment and we will show you how to use WhatsApp as a central communication channel with your customers. Simply book an appointment or write to us at team@hellomateo.de.
