Google reviews are an important indicator of the quality of products or services offered. Many consumers trust Google reviews just as much or more than personal recommendations. Companies therefore have the central task of collecting as many positive Google reviews as possible. This blog article explains how this can be done most effectively and efficiently.

Social Proof: Why Google reviews are important

In German, "social proof" can best be translated as "herd instinct". People tend to do what those around them do. Companies can use this concept of "social proof" to mobilize their own target group. But how is it possible to generate "social proof"? The answer is actually quite simple: bring together the voices and opinions of satisfied existing customers with potential new customers. The easiest way to do just that is probably Google reviews. At this point, studies also prove how strong the trust of prospective customers in Google reviews actually is: In a Capterra study, 35.62% of respondents said they trust online reviews the most when buying a new product. By contrast, only 19.69% cited friends or acquaintances as the most trusted source of information in this context. The relevance of Google reviews for companies is therefore obvious.

Tip No. 1: The foundation - A company needs satisfied customers

In Google reviews, your customers are encouraged to honestly report on their experience with the service they received or the product they purchased from a company. According to Adam Riese, positive Google reviews therefore require one thing above all: satisfied customers. If your customers are not satisfied with your service, they are unlikely to give your company a positive review. So, in order to get positive Google reviews, you should first make sure that customers are actually satisfied with the service or products your company offers. If that is the case, we move on to tip 2.

Tip #2: Actively request Google reviews

Nothing usually happens on its own: Satisfied customers in particular have a strong tendency to keep their euphoria to themselves and not submit a rating on their own. At the same time, however, dissatisfied customers tend very strongly to vent their frustration in the form of a negative review. So if you do not actively intervene in this "normal" rating behavior, it is likely that you will receive a disproportionately high number of negative ratings in the long term.

To counteract this, it is recommended to actively request reviews from (satisfied) customers and ask them to share their experience on Google. For best results, you should approach customers in a personal way to ask them for a review. A generic email will probably yield poor results, other messenger channels like WhatsApp are more recommended. Off to Tip 3.

Tip No. 3: Prominently draw attention to Google reviews

Use existing touchpoints with your customers! Apart from active review requests, there are also some existing touchpoints before and after the purchase where you can draw customers' attention to the Google review option. However, care should be taken to make the process to the submitted review as easy and quick as possible for the customer. Strategically placed links or QR codes to your Google review page are probably the best option here. These can be placed as follows, for example:

  • At the counter or cash register
  • On cash receipts
  • On invoices, delivery bills or orders
  • Directly on the sales floor
  • At the entrance, e.g. on the pane
  • On company or delivery vehicles
  • On the website
  • In email signatures
  • uvm.

The list of possibilities here is almost endless. It's best to try out a few options and then decide what will be best received by your customers. Let's move on to the 4th tip.

Tip #4: Respond to existing Google reviews

This applies to both positive and negative reviews: Respond to reviews. On the one hand, this shows your customers that you take the reviews to heart, and on the other hand, you can respond to negative feedback and thus show potential new customers that they can also count on support in the event of problems. The Google algorithm also appreciates you for your responses: It has been proven that companies' engagement with customers or their reviews contributes to a better Google ranking. So you're killing two birds with one stone. And on to tip 5.

Tip #5: Use customer feedback for your business

As a business, you should think of Google reviews as free advice on your own performance from real customers. Your customers' reviews often contain valuable feedback that helps you gain insight into the quality of your own service or products. Also, with the help of feedback from Google reviews, you can grind and improve processes in your company. Especially in the case of dissatisfied customers - i.e. negative reviews - you should look very closely and identify the points that caused the customer's dissatisfaction. If you take reviews to heart and consistently identify existing weak points, this automatically contributes to more positive reviews over time.
